Tiger in the Zen Garden

Tiger In the Zen Garden

This work is inspired by several elements of Japanese symbolism. The macaques often represent foolishness, play, and distractedness while the tiger is focused and aggressive. The lantern passively observes the scene. The Zen garden is a uniquely Japanese creation as it places the space between elements in as much esteem as the elements themselves. We see lines drawn in the pebbles which I have chosen to represent through stippling technique.

A disharmonious balance between the aggressive encroachment of the tiger, which I have chosen to partially render coming into the peaceful scene and so this work has me think about the concepts of vigilance and preparation. We ourselves could be living in absolute splendor, however without the right attentiveness, one “tiger” could come in to to completely disrupt our peace.
